Of all the details reviewed during an approach briefing, the single item that is most subject to change is the missed approach procedure. Some published procedures are quite simple and keep you within the zip code of the airport, while others involve flying many miles at low altitudes. But pilots dutifully brief them all.What relation does that missed approach procedure have to what the pilot would actually fly if they went missed? Most likely answer: absolutely nothing.Even in visual conditions, if a navaid or ILS component used for a portion of the missed approach was out of service, pilots would inquire about what to expect in the event of a missed approach. The controller would issue something simple, like, "Runway heading. Climb and maintain 2000. Return to this frequency." Now that's a missed the pilot might actually fly.
