In my previous life of computer science, we'd say, "I'd like to move to theory, because everything works in theory." The same can be said for filing IFR routes: Every route works in theory. For a while, I approached the determination of preferred IFR routes as if it were a black box. I thought that by varying the input variables-origin, destination, altitude, time of day, speed-I could figure out patterns of the actual assigned route. I was wrong.
