When the FAA invited me to participate in a study eval-uating some new-technology approaches, I figured I'd be able to wow IFR readers with a new procedure that pushes the envelope. But that's not what happened. While the approaches push the envelope, what I relied upon as a pilot to get the aircraft safely to the ground wasn't new technology so much as the same basic skills that I've been building upon since my first shaky VOR-A in an Archer over the cornfields of Indiana.
