You're a professional helicopter pilot flying high-level executives in and out of New York City. Right now you're waiting for the suits at a Hartford heliport with a destination of the 30th Street Heliport in Manhattan. The Kennedy (KJFK) METAR isn't promising, showing 600 overcast and two miles in light rain. LaGuardia (KLGA), Newark (KEWR) and Teterboro (KTEB) are all about the same, so you know that's pretty much what you're faced with going into downtown.What are your options? You can scud-run from Hartford to New York. That's safer in a helicopter than a fixed-wing aircraft, but far from ideal. You can file IFR to somewhere a bit closer in southern Connecticut, shoot an approach and then break off over Long Island Sound. Then you can scud-run to the Hudson River and the VFR fly way under the complex NYC Class B. Or you could file IFR to LaGuardia or Kennedy, fly the ILS between heavy-jet traffic, break off and hope for a quick clearance through the Class B over to the city and your destination.
