I recently set a septic tank, and the hole digger showed up with a high-dollar laser level. He had no idea that the same task could be done with a cheap bucket of water, 20 feet of clear plastic tube and yardstick. I say, enjoy the technology, but never lose the basics. Those old skills can make you a sharper pilot even when moving maps threaten to make many old techniques a lost art. Suppose you just got back from playing with a simulator where your ground tracks for several approaches at the same airport were recorded on the same piece of paper. The printout looked like the plate of spaghetti you had the night before at your favorite Italian restaurant.
