The contact approach gives the instrument pilot one more tool to ever so carefully push the edges of the safety envelope in order to get more out of the system. The idea behind all IFR tips, hints, and shortcuts however, is not to bust regs and scare the toupees off passengers. Instead, as instrument practitioners scour the wide range of possibilities, the goal is to build on the basics that constitute 95 percent of instrument ops and approach total IFR nirvana without bending aluminum. Only experience can determine where the safety line can be stretched beyond what your CFII taught.
