It's been said that an integral part of character is the ability to walk a mile in another's shoes. I was fortunate enough to walk a few miles in USAF flight boots and, other than those boots rubbing all the hair from my shins, I've found that having this insider's knowledge of military aviation comes in handy when I'm out flying the system. Although civilians and the services fly by basically the same rule book, taking a walk in their boots is a great way to enhance situational awareness. A behind-the-scenes peek at some of the procedures and lingo will up your personal safety factor since we all blend into the same IFR melting pot. Now before you go looking over your shoulder, none of this is classified Secret...at least not much.
