Last October, while you were watching the leaves turn brown, the bureaucrats in Washington D.C. were busy releasing a report which said in short, that a pilot's performance after a vacuum failure is abysmal. This report is titled, General Aviation Pilot Performance Following Unannounced In-Flight Loss of Vacuum System and Associated Instruments in Simulated Instrument Meteorological Conditions. Is the subject as boring as the title? Well, don't wait for the movie. Blessedly, it's brief, and fortunately its lessons can be learned without benefit of the laborious details. The Cliffs Notes version says this: Half of the pilots in a Bonanza who lost both the Attitude Indicator (AI) and the Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) either barely controlled or lost control of the airplane.
