The relentless progress of gallium nitride alloy materials and devices continues providing some light in an otherwise dismal time for optoelectronics as far as telecoms are concerned. In this article the focus will be to try to summarise some of the recent developments in the field from technical and marketing perspectives. In the GaN marketplace the emphasis is threefold: LEDs, lasers and microelectronics. This article tries to deal with all three by way of a summary of highlights of recent business news and technical pronouncements. The market is presently dominated by LEDs in terms of both volume and value with the other devices a long way behind. This situation shows no sign of changing for at least another three years. What mainly preoccupies the players is getting through the dip in fortunes of the past half-year. For example, several of the pioneers such as Uniroyal and Cree have suffered ill-fortune due to softer end-markets. Though seemingly unconnected, the LED market has been harmed by the decline in sales of cellphones. Popular as display backlights, much was contingent on the yet to be successful 3G format of net-enabled phones.
