Excited state dipole moments of amino substituted coumarins: Laser dyes

The absorption and fluorescence emission of amino substituted coumarins viz. 4-CH_3-7-NH_2 (Ⅰ), 4-CH_3-7-N(CH_3)_2 (Ⅱ), 4-CF_3-7-N(CH_3)_2 (Ⅲ), 4-CF_3-7-NHC_2H_5 (Ⅳ), 4-CF_3-7-N(C_2H_5)_2 (Ⅴ) and 4-CH_3-6-CH_3-7-NHC_2H_5 (Ⅵ), have been reported in various polar and non-polar organic solvents. The excited state dipole moments of these coumarin molecules have been calculated using solvatochromic data. The dipole moment in the excited state, for all the molecules investigated, is higher than the corresponding value in the ground state. The increase in dipole moment upon excitation and the effect of substituent have been explained in terms of the resonance structures of the molecule and the intra molecular charge transfer (ICT).
