The status of the advanced technical ceramics market in the USA is described. Industry and market analyses are presented for electronic ceramics, structural ceramics and ceramic coatings, according to materials type and application. The market for such ceramics totaled $4.8 billion in 1994. It is projected that by the year 2000, this market will nearly double approaching $8.5 billion and reflecting a 9.8% average annual growth. Advanced structural ceramics, such as cutting tools, wear parts, heat engines, and aerospace-related applications, will be the fastest growing segment, with an average annual growth of 13.5%. The largest segment will continue to be electronic ceramics, which while more mature in many areas, will continue to exhibit growth at an average annual rate of 9.3%. Continued growth with ceramic coatings is also anticipated (10.2%). Similar industry and market analyses will be outlined for ceramic-matrix composites.
