AFL Architects has been scouted by David Beckham's people to design a football academy and other facilities in a luxury holiday and sports complex in Brazil. The Cabo Sao Roque resort is being developed on a vast 3,500-acre coastal site in the north-east of the country by Norwegian magnate Torben Frantzen. The resort will be the site of the third David Beckham Academy, following the launch of the concept in London and Los Angeles. The academy will offer training facilities for both international teams and local talent. Beckham's management team signed up Manchester-based AFL Architects to design the academy and a 10,000-seat stadium next door on the strength of the practice's new training ground for Chelsea FC in Cobham, Surrey. As well as the football academy, AFL will be designing a clubhouse and other facilities for polo and equestrian sports, plus a Rubens Barrichello Karting Centre. It also produced early concept designs for a tennis academy, golf facilities, and a number of hotels on the site. "The concept is an extension of golfing holidays, but it will also provide an international-quality training base," says AFL's Bruce Caldwell. The practice is working within a masterplan by Brazilian architect Andre Sa that aims to maintain a village-style, low-rise skyline profile.
