摘要

The notion of 'the quantified self' is something that has rapidly passed into everyday discourse. This is a knowing self in which numbers enable us to see our body in new ways. The quantified self, as it has been called, often seems anchored in tropes of self-improvement and self-mastery, in which people are able to hone themselves by knowing their bodies in greater detail. In this book, Deborah Lupton manages to take this popular and almost celebratory use of this terminology and shows exactly how it might be seen through a sociological lens. As such, Lupton manages here to turn 'the quantified self into a concept or analytical category and thus transforms the term into something with real analytical insight and possibility. Suddenly, in Lup-ton's hands, this term shifts from its popular usage to being a whole sociological agenda or research programme. In the best traditions of sociology, we find that something apparently personal is deeply connected with broader social processes, technological transformations and cultural shifts.
