摘要

Filippo Trevisan's Disability rights advocacy online: voice, empowerment and global connectivity (2017) is an especially timely study. According to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2016), UK disability welfare reform has led to 'grave or systemic violations' (p. 20) of disabled people's rights. Adam Hills on the British comedy talk show The Last Leg describes the effects of these reforms more bluntly as 'disabled genocide' (York, 2017). Currently, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) threatens to decrease enrolment in Medicaid - the health coverage programme that serves more than 10 million Americans with disabilities (Paradise, Lyons, & Rowland, 2015) - by 14 million (Congressional Budget Office, 2017). Disability rights advocates fear that AHCA '[will force] many disabled individuals [in the US]. .. to choose between incarceration in a medical facility or homeless-ness' (Perry, 2017). Meanwhile, disabled activists in the UK (Worley, 2016), the US (Perry, 2017), Greece (Associated Press, 2016), Bolivia (Watts, 2017), Israel (Grave-Lazi, 2017), Spain (Harter, 2016), and elsewhere protest austerity measures in public demonstrations and online (e.g., using Twitter hashtags like #RightsNotGames, #CutsKill, and #SaveMedi-caid). As crises and protests continue, this book will provide vital context for understanding contemporary disability rights movements and social movement more broadly, as well as the affordances, challenges, and risks involved in online advocacy.
