John Nerone draws upon a rich variety of scholarly research to produce a summary history of American media operations and their cultures. He is most keen to explore the relationship between the general public, the media of mass communication, and the political realm, and as such, he focuses tightly on those American media outlets that produce news. The book is organized through a simple chronology. Notably, however, his analysis is much more philosophical than historical in its ambitions and its conclusions. In this respect, the book echoes the structure and tone of Gerald Friesen's Citizens and Nation (2000), which focused on parallel developments in Canada.
