摘要

The theme of the 2012 American Sociological Association (ASA) Meetings, held in Denver, Colorado, was 'Real Utopias: Emancipatory Projects, Intuitional Designs, and Possible Futures'. Although this refrain was meant to encapsulate the whole of the meetings, it may have been best suited to understanding the past decade of studying the Internet Society and new, emerging technologies. Barry Wellman's (2006) 'Sociologists Engaging with Computers', an introduction to a set of papers covering the history and development of the Communication and Information Technologies Section of ASA (CITASA) in Social Science Computer Review, provided a wonderful examination of how from 1988 to 2005 the section changed orientation, focus, and membership.
