For a smart and insightful analysis of free expression, there is no better place to start than Timothy Garton Ash's book, aptly and succinctly titled, 'Free Speech'. More than just analyzing the issues around the topic, he is also not afraid to take on what many might deem an impossible task of trying to find solutions for the free speech matters that publics, companies and even governments around the world should agree on. Ash does that by offering us ten principles of free speech, which organize and structure the book. He tests these principles through the discussion of a wide range of free speech controversies, including the role that journalism should play, whether violence is ever acceptable, and how to deal with issues of speech related to religion, privacy or secrecy. The knowledge Ash brings in when analyzing some of these challenging, difficult and controversial areas of free speech is stunning and worth the price of admission alone.
