Adam Matthew used its new Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technology to make the personal and professional papers of Florence Nightingale (from the Medical Services and Warfare collection) fully searchable for the first time. So far, HTR has also been used on the Colonial America collection's third module, The American Revolution. It features handwritten documents dating to the 1770s and 1780s, which are now fully searchable. "The HTR application uses complex algorithms and artificial intelligence to determine possible combinations of characters in manuscripts," according to the press release. "This enables relevant handwritten text to be identified at document level, allowing users to easily navigate between highlighted search results."
