摘要

The ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition, held June 20-25, 2019, in Washington, D.C., kicked off with an opening keynote from Jason Reynolds (author of the middle-grade Track series, among other books). He poked fun at himself for having to follow last year's Opening General Session speaker, Michelle Obama: "Lower your expectations immediately," he told the crowd. Reynolds had nothing to worry about-he may not be the former first lady, but he was an electric speaker who set the perfect tone for a dynamic conference. Reynolds gave his keynote the unofficial title, "The Ridiculous and Absurd Study of Architecture-That's Hopefully Kind of True-in Five Parts." This provided a clue to how freewheeling his stories would be. And their connection didn't become clear until the end of his speech: A lifetime of thinking about spirituality and the importance of sharing stories translated into a celebration of libraries' role in society, as well as a call to action to help create "walking, talking libraries." He first spoke about his family, showing how his mother's faith influenced how he thought about what is sacred, and about his best friend, with whom he shared hopes and dreams. He talked about the destruction of the Library of Alexandria, when those in power realized the danger of letting information spread to the populace. By invoking Vitruvius, who used the symmetry of the human body in his architecture, he drew a comparison to the saying, "Your body is a temple." Reynolds noted that the principles of what makes something sacred are the same no matter the worship center-come as you are; everyone is welcome. The library is a sacred space in that way, and if the body is a temple, the body could be a library. He said you could even think of librarians as architects and libraries as warehouses to build human libraries-i.e., people who have their own reference services inside themselves and hold others' stories (thus making them more empathetic).
