Information professionals are well-versed in information literacy. We are great at interpreting text and teaching others to do research, but we may not be experts in visual information, which is growing in importance. Library users need to be able to interpret this information and use it effectively. In 2011, ACRL issued its Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education (ala .org/acrl/standards/visualliteracy) to address the use of visual information in the academic environment. In Visual Literacy for Libraries: A Practical, Standards-Based Guide, the authors-who were on the task force that developed the ACRL standards-guide academic librarians to a better understanding of visual literacy and how to apply the concept in their daily work.
