The ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association) Information Online conference, held Feb. 2-5 in Sydney, began with a hiss and a roar as keynote speaker Siva Vaidhyanathan regaled the packed auditorium with a fascinating review of the Human Knowledge Project and how it could involve information professionals of all types, in all regions. Vaidhyanathan, who is a professor of media studies at the University of Virginia, thinks that it is vitally important to create (in a more altruistic fashion) a competing avenue to Google's expressed desire to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible." He gave a thoughtful and balanced appraisal of Google's history and its evolving intentions and praised the company's plans and achievements. But he moderated this with an overarching concern about the perils of permitting a single commercial company to self-allocate unfettered power in such an important project for the world and its population.
