The idea of lawyers suing or being sued over legal documents may strike some people as either amusing or ironic. But a series of recent copyright infringement lawsuits over the use of documents that were either created for the legal process or used as part of a legal process are raising interesting questions about the copyright status of public records. The outcome of these lawsuits could also have a significant impact on public access to courtroom and other legal proceedings.
