Within days of taking office, the new British Conservative-Liberal Coalition Government withdrew funding for the proposed Institute tor Web Science that was reported in last month's [June] column. The previous Labour administration announced that ￡30 million would be available for a research institute to be headed by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, and Nigel Shadbolt, a professor at the University of Southampton. However, as part of the new government's spending proposal to cut ￡6 billion, the Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills listed the project as one to be axed, with the comment that the proposal was still under development.
