As web-based applications became more popular over the last few years, email was one of the first spaces to take advantage of this shift. For personal use, the benefits of web-based email are readily apparent: It's easy to access your in-box regardless of the computer being used, it needs little or no setup, and it has the best price point of all-it's free. But in an enterprise environment, desktop-based solutions for email ruled because they offered functionality that the web-based alternatives didn't. Options such as calendar integration, to-do lists, and message templates made programs such as Outlook a better choice for professional use, whether in the business or the academic world.
