In my November 2007 column, I discussed sites that provided case law for free. At the time, I wondered if access to this particular area of law was public record.rnWhile the answer is still not clear, the question remains: Are opinions issued by state and federal courts freely available to all, or do one or more companies (Thomson West/Lexis/BNA) hold the rights? At firstrnglance, court opinions issued by taxpayer-paid judges in publicly financed courts should be available to all at little to no cost. This is usually the case-anyone who walks into a courtroom may have access to court records.
