Ahushed audience watched as Anne Beaumont sat alone on the stage studying a laptop screen in a session at the VALA2006 Conference, held Feb. 8—10 in Melbourne. Beaumont, one of the authors of Federated Searching: Disparate and Distributed Databases, One Common Interface for Library Users, showed little interest in her image being projected onto the two large screens in the auditorium. The moderator of the panel discussion on Top Ten Tech Trends was running solo until technology gadget expert Richard Giles, who has worked with Sun Microsystems Australia for the past decade, joined the session via podcast, neatly segueing into the conference session and the first of his top trends.
