Not so the iPod (http://www.apple .com/ipod), though. Last year's must-have Christmas gift even sold for a premium on eBay. The iPod is turning out to be a far more versatile, solidly useful device than most of us ever imagined at the outset. Apple's foray into the world of consumer products has been successful beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Introduced only 3 years ago, the stylish miniature music player (which is only the size of a pack of cigarettes) broke new ground for Apple in terms of its popularity as a mass-market electronics device—due partly to its compatibility with both PCs and Macs.
