Leading nutritionists call for more research on saturated fatty acids

Leading nutritionists and scientists have called for new wide-ranging research to establish the impact of saturated fats on health. Speaking at the Saturated Fat, Dairy and Cardiovascular Disease: A Fresh Look at the Evidence, conference, Dr Anne Mullen, Director of Nutrition, The Dairy Council, said: "Saturated fat is an umbrella term and there is growing evidence that saturated fatty acids do not all behave in the same when it comes to cardiovascular disease and diabetes in particular. "The evidence on which current guidelines on saturated fat is not conclusive. In recent decades science has progressed from when the guidelines were first instituted and therefore our understanding of saturated fat needs to move on too." At a series of conferences hosted by the Dairy Council and DairyCo in Glasgow, Cardiff and London, experts in nutrition reviewed the evidence on saturated fatty acids, dairy and cardiometabolic risk.
