Due to the growing population and the rising incomes in emerging economies such as China, India and Brazil the FAO predicted a worldwide increase in meat consumption. Animal breeders have therefore been looking for new ways to cover the immense demand for protein-containing food for the animals and humankind. Currently, fish meal is one of the most Important sources of protein for the animal feed industry, an estimated 7 million tons per year is used for animal food. But owing to overfishing, fish stocks will not be able to cover the future protein needs.
