摘要

Forces in the U.S. Southern Command area of operations have less than half the resources they need to meet their drug interdiction goals, according to a Fourth Fleet and SOUTHCOM official. Ted Venable, counter-illicit trafficking program manager for Fourth Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command, told sister publication Inside the Navy last week that the Navy is meeting all of Fourth Fleet's requests for assets. However, across the board - including both Defense Department and Coast Guard platforms - SOUTHCOM has less than SO percent of the assets it needs to interdict 40 percent of the drugs being trafficked in the area, the goal set by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, which believes that's what it would take to make cartels unprofitable.
