Growing economic uncer-tainty has investors on edge. Even a veteran like Scott Malpass, CIO of the University of Notre Dame, is treading cautiously. But Malpass, now in his 26th year heading the Midwestern Catholic university's investment office, is sticking to the principles that have guided his decisions as he has evolved the Notre Dame model and racked up a 12.2 percent annu-alized return over the decades. Malpass attributes much of his success to the highly motivated, 38-member team he has built, most of them fellow alumni of Notre Dame, where he earned his MBA in 1986, joining the fund the next year. In fact, half of his current employees were once students in the finance class he teaches. He also points to the stability of having worked with only two investment committee chairs during his tenure. The U. S. endowment, now approaching the $10 billion milestone, is a far cry from the $453 million that Malpass started with in 1988. It gained 19.7 percent during the fiscal year ended June 30. Malpass, 52, recently spoke with Senior Writer Frances Denmark about how he's navigating the increasingly treacherous investment landscape.
