For decades koc holding. turkey's leading business conglo- merate, has been a step ahead of the competition. In the 1940s the fledgling company ' was an early investor in manufacturing, beginning with a joint venture to make light-bulbs. In the 1980s, as Ankara lifted barriers to European imports, Koc thrived in spite of the increased competition by producing export-quality cars and appliances. In the mid-2000s, as Turkey's economic resurgence took hold, Koc diversified its interests with major investments in energy and banking. And today, as Turkey is moving its economy away from a Eurocentric, consumer-driven model to focus more on trade with its Middle Eastern neighbors, Koc is once again leading the way.
