Americans, with much of the world looking on intently, have been captivated by the tight contest for the Democratic presidential nomination between Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Victories in the Texas and Ohio primaries early this month succeeded in breathing new life into Clinton's struggling campaign. She remains the underdog, though, hounded by the perception - deftly promoted by Obama - that she represents a throwback to the ideological clashes of the 1990s, during the administration of her husband, ratherthana force for positive change in the future.
