Like most emerging economies, Turkey was hit hard last May and June by turmoil in the global markets. The country demonstrated great resilience, however, and the turbulence did not drive off foreign investors. Lured by competitive yields and by the opportunity to get a foothold in a rapidly developing country closely associated with the European Union, outside investors are coming in ever greater droves. Some 73 percent of the $40 billion in FDI that Turkey has attracted in the past 12 years was recorded in the past two years, and 68 percent of shares on the Istanbul Stock Exchange are currently held by foreign buyers.
