The U.S. wind energy sector is growing fast, driven in part by the technology's low-risk profile, offering an opportunity for institutional investors. Some 2,500 megawatts (MW) of new generating capacity—a capital investment of over $3 billion—will be installed this year. By year's end, wind farms in the U.S. will total over 9,000 MW in capacity and generate enough electricity to serve 2.4 million homes. By 2020, wind energy technology could provide 6 percent of the nation's electricity—a share similar to hydropower today.
