Even mid-week, the restaurants of Reykjavik are bursting at the seams. There is an almost tangible sense of optimism apparent from the briefest of walks around 101, the fashionable downtown district in Iceland's capital. The reasons are not difficult to find. While many of the larger European economies have been languishing, Iceland is in the midst of a boom. Gross domestic product (GDP) has been growing at over 5 percent a year; the country's stock exchange index, the ICEX-15, rose around 60 percent last year; and the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Report 2004 reported that Iceland had the 10th most competitive economy in the world.
