When giant waves from the tsunami struck parts of indonesia last december, it looked as if they would also destroy the hopes of newly elected president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to turn the economy around. But despite the magnitude of the disaster and the tragic loss of human life, the country's economy is expanding at its fastest level since the start of the Asian financial crisis. After posting an increase of 5.1 percent in 2004, GDP rose by 6.3 percent in the first half of this year, thanks to higher exports, stronger domestic consumption and a slight pick-up in investment. Next year, the government is predicting an even stronger performance with growth projected at 6 to 6.5 percent.
