The famous American evangelist Lyman Beecher once stated that'no great advance has ever been made in science, politics, or religion, without controversy'. Needless to say the controversy surrounding the battlecruiser concept and the destruction of three of their class at the Battle of Jutland (referred to as the Battle of the Skagerrak by the Germans) in 1916 still rages amongst historians to this day. The fact that the three battlecruisers destroyed by catastrophic internal explosions were British, in addition to their genesis being credited to British Admiral Sir John Fisher, has caused the majority of the literature to centre on the battlecruisers of the British Royal Navy.9 Consequently any in depth analysis of their opponents, most notably the Panzerkreuzers of the Imperial German Navy, has seemingly appeared in many books only as an afterthought. However, utilising first-hand accounts and many previously unpublished official documents Gary Staff sets out to provide the first comprehensive English language history of the German battlecruisers. And he is well-equipped to do so - Staff is no stranger to the subject of the Imperial Germany Navy, having written a number of books on German warships of the period.
