After touching bottom last year, the number of launches worldwide is expected to pick up sharply in 2005. If the year ahead plays out as planned, the number of launches worldwide should shoot up from 55 last year to around 90 (see table). A total of 67 launches are planned in the US and Russia alone, plus another 22 split between Europe, China, Japan and India. For Europe, the year got off to a flying start with the flawless return to flight of the heavylift Ariane-5/ECA on February 12, wiping out the memory of its failed inaugural flight in December 2002.
