Neither the Airbus A380 nor the Boeing 7E7 were present at this year's Asian Aerospace in Singapore, and for good reason: the former is still being assembled and the latter has not yet even been launched. But the two aircraft will have been on people's minds, nevertheless. Other absentees were the A340-600 and the 777-300ER, which are head-to-head in several sales campaigns. Air New Zealand is studying the replacement of half of its 747-400 fleet, that makes four aircraft out of eight, by the long-rangers, with 300 to 350 seats. And Royal Brunei is work'-ing on a complete replacement of its fleet in a drastic restructuring operation. The carrier is looking to replace its eight Boeing 767-300ER and two 757s with six long- and a dozen medium-range air-craft over the next decade. In addition Cathay Pacific, which recent-ly became the launch customer for the 747-400 Special Freighter with an order for six aircraft, has expressed a need for 15 to 20 long-rangers with 300 seats. The competition between the A340-600 and the 777-300ER is wide open, since the carrier is operating three examples of the former under a lease contract, but also has fourteen 777-200/300 in its fleet. The same competition is open at Singapore Airlines, which has relaunched its requirement for the replacement of its A3010 and a certain number of 747-400s.
