The Boeing Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche has been in development for some twenty years. Threats have evolved that today cast doubts on its design philosophy. The Comanche scout/attack helicopter differs in many respects from present-day rotorcraft. Its avionics suite is optimized for operation within a network of sensors and weapon systems, in accordance with the Pentagon's 'network-centric warfare' philosophy. Its fly-by-wire control system provides unprecedented flight efficiency, agility, handling qualities, flight safety and reduction in pilot workload. The relatively light and compact design and long range give it high mobility and - hopefully - low operating cost. But the most striking feature of the helicopter is its stealth. According to its manufacturers, its radar cross-section (RCS) is 1/600th of that of the older AH-64 Apache helicopter. This should theoretically reduce tracking range by 80 percent and detection range by up to 96 percent. The exhaust air diffusion system located in the rear fuselage reduces the infrared signature considerably, and the five-bladed main rotor with swept-back tips makes the RAH-66 quieter, as does the fantail shrouded tail rotor. What operational benefits do the stealth features of the Comanche actually provide in practice? No definite answer can be given, for much information about the helicopter is still classified. But a general assessment can be made, based on unclassified information.
