摘要

This paper finds that cultural traits have geographical origins and that culture influences economic development, even after controlling for institutions. The effect of geography and institutions on economic growth and development is a topic that has gained momentum in the economics literature over the past two decades. Although some economists have toyed with the notion of culture as being an important variable to add to the mix, its study has been left mainly to other disciplines such as anthropology and sociology. This paper incorporates culture and its effects on economic development to bridge the gap between the work done by economists and anthropologists.
