Competing Technologies in the Principles of Micro Classroom: Aplia vs. Sapling

This article reports on the results of research determining the impact of two competing web-based assignment technologies (Aplia vs. Sapling) on students' performance in a Principles of Economics setting. In 2013, Aplia had a presence in more than 815 colleges and universities with more than 170,000 students using Aplia per term. In relative terms, Sapling is a more recent arrival. Several of Sapling top managers are former Aplia managers. As customer reviews indicate, Sapling has the look and feel of Aplia but at a lower price. The study was conducted at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), a regional comprehensive public university offering undergraduate and graduate (Master's and Ed.D.) degrees.
