The Launch of INS Vikrant was a red Letter day in the Indian Navy's BLue Water NavaL Ambitions story. A report. The impressive launch of India's first home grown aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd at Kochi in Kerala on August 12 marked a major step towards building a strong and versatile Indian Navy, capable of positioning itself as a three dimensional, network capable, blue water maritime force to ensure not only Indian maritime security but also take care of the Indian interests across the global oceanic sprawl. "The launch of an indigenous aircraft carrier is the first step in a long journey but an important one," observed the Defence Minister A.K Antony. Incidentally, Antony described the launch asa proud moment that would "witness our efforts at achieving self reliance in the field of warship design and construction as very few countries posses the capability to design and develop aircraft carriers." Indeed, this development coming as it does closely on the heels of India's indigenous nuclear powered submarine INS Arihant going critical, has the potential to strengthen the power projection capability of the Indian navy.
