So, what is holding back plasma technology? There are commercial aspects. Plasma technology requires capital expenditure on new machines, in a new technology in which the textile industry is seriously lacking know-how. Other concerns in the industry are potential risks of pinholes, uniformity of the treatment and durability of the effects after frequent washings. The latter concern is addressed by cross linking of polymers. However, as the industry is gaining confidence with more and more successful pilot installations, the environmental benefits from dry short processing, without pollution, saving energy and water, will boost the implementation of this technology across the industry in the future beyond niche markets.
