Changes in the orthopteran species abundance and species diversity due to the clearing of a grassland ecosystem for building construction was studied. In order to separate the natural temporal variability displayed by insect populations from the effect of the disturbance, the Before-After-Control-Impact sampling design was employed in which the Impact and the Control sites were sampled at the same time Before and After human perturbation. A significant reduction in the orthopteran diversity was observed in the Impact site after the disturbance. While most of the species were disturbed due to the anthropogenic intervention, the gryllids Trigonidium cicindeloides Rambur and Gryllodes sigillatus (Walker), the acridids Oxya fuscovittata (Marsh.) and Diabolocatantops pinguis (Walker) and the tettigoniid, Phaneroptera gracilis Burm appeared to be less disturbed due to habitat loss. The results presented provide a guide to the extent of disturbance that the orthopteran community would suffer as a result of the reduction in the habitable area and other disturbance associated with construction activity.
