A Transciplinary Education Program for Regional Sustainable Development

摘要

To meet the challenges of transdisciplinary regional sustainable development there is urgent need for the education of a young leadership of scientists and professionals working together as close teams towards a sustainability revolution. For this purpose they have to be not only well-versed in their own scientific field of specialization, but at the same time, they should be able to act also as integrators. They should help bridging the gaps between the different realms of the natural and social sciences and the humanities involved in sustainable development research in sustainable development. They will have to communicate the results of their study as usable, "pragmatic" information to the stakeholders, the professionals, the politicians and the public at large involved in the decision-making process, furthering its implementation in their daily practice. This requires a comprehensive, future-oriented educational program, based on systems theory and its new paradigms of wholeness and complexity. The overarching transdisciplinary systems goal for this education should be the Total Human Ecosystem concept, integrating humans and their total environment, as the highest co-evolutionary level of the ecological hierarchy on earth.
