摘要

This is not a history of systems science nor of systems engineering; it is a very personal story about a career exploring both these fields. No attempt is made to give a complete accounting of all my experiences; only a few major events and epiphanies are recounted. I begin with recollections of early influences. Then, I tell how, as a student at Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin, unaware of systems science and engineering, I followed my intellectual nose but nonetheless managed to avail myself of tools I later found useful for research in systems science and systems engineering. It was the advent of the digital computer that, for me, ended years of study of pure mathematics. Leaving the University of Wisconsin, I went to the other extreme and started to pursue a career in industry that lasted only two years. It was during the subsequent 30 years as a member of the Faculty of the College of Engineering of the University of Arizona that I became wholly committed to the development of systems science and its applications to systems engineering. I had to leave the University of Arizona, however, in order to finish the first volume of Model-based System Engineering wherein mathematically rigorous foundations for systems engineering are established. I end the story with a discussion of plans for future research in systems science and systems engineering.
