This paper describes the application of numerical simulation with the finite element modeling software ANSYS~® University Research, which contains the ANSYS FLOTRAN~® capability, to the modeling and optimization of heat exchangers [0]. The thermal performance, heat transfer coefficient, thermal efficiency, Nusselt number, velocity distribution and pressure drop in shell - and - tube heat exchangers with segmental baffles were investigated and visualized for different baffle cuts, different baffle numbers and for different Reynolds numbers in each case. For the same boundary conditions, the average heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop on the shell- side rise up as baffle number increases or as baffle cut decreases. The results of simulation were compared with data known from state of the art literature.
