摘要

The overall heat transfer coefficient of a heat exchanger can be evaluated using a steady state method, which is time consuming and involves long waiting time for steady state to be reached. In this paper, a transient-based technique, which provides speedy measurement, is presented. Finite Element Method together with Galerkin approach and implicit Euler method is used to solve energy equations of a concentric tube heat exchanger for the determination of the overall heat transfer coefficient by the transient-based technique. This technique can be used for a heat exchanger which can have either parallel flow or counter flow with equal or unequal mass flow rates involving liquid to liquid or liquid to gas heat transfer. The technique has been validated with analytical methods available in literature and verified with experimental results.
